It’s official: celebrity photographer (and photographer of celebrities) Michael Grecco will be journeying to New Zealand to appear as the keynote speaker at this year’s NZIPP Infocus Conference.
Beginning his career as a hard-news photojournalist for the Associated Press and the Boston Herald, Grecco covered events such as Hurricane Gloria before turning his hand to celebrity photography.
Since making the change, Grecco has made portraits of such Hollywood lights as Martin Scorsese, Hugh Hefner, Robert Duvall, Will Ferrell, Mel Brooks, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz, Jet Li, Bill Murray and Joaquin Phoenix for titles such as Time, Wired and People.
Grecco has also published three books explaining his methods, The Art of Portrait Photography, Creative Lighting Techniques and Strategies and Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait, the Art of Celebrity and Editorial Photography.
Grecco’s latest project, Naked Ambition, which features a revealing look into the Oscars of the porn industry, gave outlet to the photographer’s increasing interest in videography, which he sees as becoming a necessary tool in the photographer’s trade.
Held in Queenstown this September 9 through 14, Infocus is organized by New Zealand’s professional photography industry association, NZIPP and encompasses the annual Epson/NZIPP Iris Professional Photography Awards, three days of conferences, workshops and masterclasses, as well as an industry exhibition.
Tickets go on sale in July.
Sadly, photographer Vincent Laforet has canceled all of his scheduled appearances in New Zealand.
Laforet was due to begin his tour in Palmerston North for the Reel Earth Gala Awards Festival, at the Regent Theatre on May 22, followed on Sunday, followed by a presentation of a selection of his stills and movies at the Regent and a workshop specifically designed for Pros. Laforet’s planned appearance at Sylvia Park Hoyts in Auckland on May 25 has also been canned.
No reason was given for the shut-down, with Reel Earth and Canon citing ‘circumstances beyond [their] control’ as causing the cancellation. However, Reel Earth director, Warren Jones has stood down from his position, with the organisation stating that he ’remains under medical care.’
Other scheduled events at the Reel Earth Festival are expected to go on.
