She might be a rising star of photography, but Irina Rozovsky can’t force herself to shoot all the time. Guilty as she may feel, it simply won’t come out. But, she says, sooner or later, something strikes her in a genuine, sincere way.

“Sometimes it’s so much more productive just to look around you,” says Rozovsky. “Your eyes will feast sooner or later.”

It’s a message she hopes to pass on to her young photography students at Harvard University, where Rozovsky teaches when she’s not concentrating on her own work.

“I really enjoy teaching the introductory classes,” explains Rozovsky. “I teach them in the same vein that there’s an instinct that needs to be developed, an eye, and I try to avoid overthinking at that principal stage.”

Born in Moscow, Rozovsky’s family emigrated to the United States when she was eight. A natural polymath, she studied both French and Spanish and had a number of language-related jobs after university. A passion for photography, however, had the young Rozovsky lumping gear for commercial shooters.

Her first book, One to Nothing (due out early next year), was born of a recent trip to Israel, where the photographer found herself stunned by the country’s effect on her. Although she’d only taken a couple of rolls of film, the photographer found herself in a frenzy. Read the rest of this entry »
