It’s been a big week for Nikon – first they release two brand-spanking new dSLRs and then they invent an entirely new kind of camera! The Coolpix S1000pj has something no other compact can claim: a built in projector. Announced as part of Nikon’s new Coolpix range, the S1000pj is the world’s first camera that can project still and moving images, reportedly up to 40 inches in size.

The nifty little camera is apparently no slouch in taking pictures either, with a 12.1 megapixel sensor and an EXPEED image processor, ISO capabilities up to 6400, a 28mm Nikkor lens and a whole bevy of functions such as ‘skin softening,’ ‘smart portrait,’ and ‘best shot selector’ modes.

Like a number of innovative camera releases of late, the S100pj rethinks the way people use their compact cameras. While drawing from once-popular traditions such as slide projection, Nikon offers a new suggestion about how consumers might utilise their point-and-shoot.

Along with the novel projector product, a line of new-and-improved Coolpix cameras were announced, including the S640, with its 12.2 megapixel sensor and a custom-optimised white balance based on dSLR technology, and the 12 megapixel S570 with its 28mm 5x zoom.

All the rage at present, the touchscreen allows users adjust the exposure via on-screen sliders, edit the snaps they’ve already taken and operate the shutter.

Local release dates for the range are yet to be announced, but a range of colours will be available when the camera goes on sale.
