Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo has been crowned World Press Photographer of the Year for his picture of women shouting in protest from a rooftop in Tehran during last year’s contested presidential election in Iran.
Masturzo also took out the People in the News category with the story as a whole, which captured the dissent spiling into the streets. The photographer wins €10,000 and a Canon EOS dSLR with a lens kit for his efforts.
Jury chair Ayperi Karabuda Ecer commented: “The photo shows the beginning of something, the beginning of a huge story. It adds perspectives to news. It touches you both visually and emotionally, and my heart went out to it immediately.”
The World Press Photography Awards increased in popularity this year, with the jury viewing a record number of photographs with 101,960 images submitted by 5,847 photographers representing 128 different nationalities.
