News: EXCLUSIVE: Canon Unveils G11; Introduces Brand-New S90

Canon PS G11 S90 release-1

If the release of two new SuperZooms, the SX20 and SX120 weren’t enough, Canon has outdone itself by releasing another pair of PowerShots in the high-end G11 compact camera and the brand-new S90 model.

Successor to the G10, a highly-regarded compact camera chosen by professional photographers when seeking something lighter than their dSLR, the new compact features a 5X zoom and a 2.8-inch vari-angle screen.

The G11 does, however, does have one surprising design feature. While the G10 used a 14.7 megapixel sensor, and the G9 from 2007 featured 12 megapixels, the G11 makes the bold move of returning to a round 10.0 megapixels.Taking the focus off the amount of megapixels will likely contribute to the better low-light performance which the company claims.

The PowerShot G11 expands the range of shooting for a compact camera like never before,” said Canon New Zealand brand manager Rochelle Mora. “Users can enjoy the high quality and features they’d expect from a DSLR in a compact body.

Also introduced was the S90, the first compact in an entirely new line. The 175g compact also uses the 10.0 megapixel sensor and uses a rather fast f2 lens. The S90 also features an aperture-ring-like control, which from D-Photo’s brief test seemed to be exceptionally easy to use.

Both models also feature image stabilisation, intelligent auto modes, full manual control, servo AF/AE for continuous focus, RAW capabilities and low light modes. While pricing is yet to be confirmed, the S90 and the G11 are expected instore from October 2009.
