Canon has kicked off the year with a welcome update to its popular EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM telephoto zoom lens, improving low-light performance and reducing the minimum focusing distance from 1.4m to 1.2m. By using five UD lens elements and a new Fluorite element, the updated 70-200mm delivers images with higher contrast and reduced chromatic aberration, while focusing faster than ever before. Canon engineers have also redesigned the image stabilsation system, which the company claims offers the equivalent effect of a shutter speed approximately four stops faster.
While it’s not any heavier than its predecessors, it’s hardier, with increased moisture and dust protection. While we haven’t heard about pricing as yet, the EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM will be available in April 2010.
