I tried to make this image of my daughter have a sort of Victorian feel to it. Shot using window light.

Meredith says that she enjoys photographing children because they tend to be less inhibited than adults. Even so, she says that kids are taught to smile for the camera from a young age, so capturing a candid expression can still be a challenge. In this image, to take Georgia’s mind off the camera, Meredith struck up a conversation about the Disney movie Frozen. Using a wide aperture to achieve a soft background, and slightly underexposing the image to avoid blown-out highlights, she captured Georgia in thought, with a natural and unguarded expression. @the.wildlife

In this image — shot at Ngarunui Beach in Raglan in late November — John focuses on the surfers’ silhouettes as a compositional element against the surf. John says he was attracted to the dappled light and the strong contrast. Using a long lens as a way of compressing depth to create a juxtaposition between foreground and background, he capturing this atmospheric scene that is entirely relatable to all those who don’t restrict their ventures into the surf to perfect blue-sky days. @j_over_k

While Jeff’s daily commute on the Devonport to Auckland ferry is usually full of business commuters focused on their smartphones, on this day, Jeff’s eye was drawn to a figure reclining on a nearby seat. In contrast to the normally reserved passengers, this gentleman was obviously lost in his book and entirely at ease in the public space. @jeffh
