In the 1960s, as new motorways enabled suburban sprawl, Auckland's population passed half a million. This show is a snapshot of that moment, in photography, film, and painting. Gary Baigent’s 1967 Auckland photo book, The Unseen City, with its gritty aesthetic and bohemian attitude, was an antidote to the saccharine local picture books at the time. Rodney Charters’ 1966 Auckland road movie Film Exercise features Queen Street nightlife and a soundtrack by the La De Da’s. Robert Ellis’s drawings show how his famous Motorway paintings were grounded in his experience of his newly adopted city. A joint project with Te Uru, Titirangi.
